Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (Joint BME) provides students with design and problem-solving skills in engineering for application in the clinical, medical and biological sciences. Through this focus, students develop critical thinking to improve health care through innovative products and practices. Your direct support provides resources that strengthen the academic and practical experience of our undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.  

Contributions of all sizes during GiveUNC support the overall experiential education for Joint BME students, including providing opportunities for our students to participate in internships in industry. As a department, we are passionate about providing access to learning through industry, as it aligns with our core values to encourage innovation, collaboration and translation of research to commercial spaces, where biomedical engineering can ultimately impact a patient’s life. One of our students stated her internship provided her an opportunity where she was “working in a lab and learning valuable techniques and skills that I could not have gotten from my classes. It is a wonderful and invaluable experience that I am truly grateful for!”
